Three teens added to sex offenders registry for relatively minor offense
    Zimbabwe Star
    Saturday 30th January, 2010

Three teens are charged with felonies for possession of nude photo.
A 14-year-old boy and two 13-year-old girls will spend the rest of their lives paying for a error of judgement made in their teens.

This is the opinion of many people who have commented on the 'sexting' incident involving the three minors in a town in the U.S. state of Washington.

The Chinook Middle School students were formally charged Friday in juvenile court with felonies stemming from an incident in which they allegedly used their mobile phones to pass on nude photos of a 14-year-old girl.

Within the North Thurston school district, part of the Thurston County, the photo has become viral, spreading even to the Olympia High School, Olympia being the capital of Washington.

“It’s everywhere,” said the girl’s mother, identified to The Olympian only by her first name, Toni, to protect the victim’s identity.

Toni said her daughter showed a lack of judgment when taking the nude photo of herself and sending it to her then-boyfriend, but does not deserve the repercussions that have followed.

Each of the three students involved have been charged with a single count of dealing in depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct. It is a class C felony, and carries a maximum penalty of 30 days in juvenile detention.

However, anyone convicted of the offense is required to register as a sex offender, which means the three teenagers’ names will be on a potentially public list, and for the rest of their lives, whenever they move into a new community, that community will need to be informed that a sex offender has moved in.

The implications are severe. In thirty years time, they may still be haunted by their juvenile bad judgment, including whatever treatment they might receive in detention when registered as sex offenders.

Toni has said she and her daughter do not think that the three teens deserve to have to register as sex offenders, or to have felony records follow them into adulthood.

“That isn’t going to solve anything,” she said. “But we both agree that there need to be consequences – stiff consequences.”

The boyfriend sent the photo to one of the girls charged in the case after he had broken up with the alleged victim. That girl sent it to the other girl who has been charged, and she sent it to other students, according to police.

“The 14 year old girl who took a sexually explict photo of herself should be charged/disciplined with consequences as well” (sic) commented one reader on theolympian.com.

Another insisted that “these charges seem very harsh. they are kids, we have all done stupid things as kids” (sic).

For others it is a sad reminder that the law designed to protect children, so often lets them down.

“Parents, please take time to use this incident to talk to your children about the importance of treating others with respect and dignity no matter how angry they may be”, a Chinook Middle School Parent wrote.

Three teens charged as sex offenders for possession of photo

http://sexoffenderissues.blogspot.com This is child abuse, IMO.

There is no question that the lesbian movement is using the “empowerment of women” to persecute people and take things too far in the punishment of sexual related mistakes. As the father of a daughter who is an adult young woman now, I certainly don’t want some “sexual predator” abusing my daughter or any other human being. However, the lesbians are taking this persecution way too far.

    How Crazy Will It Get?

Totally, completely, incomprehensively stupid, ridiculous, and nonsensical. The sex offender registry has gone from a tool to aid law enforcement in monitoring society’s most violent and dangerous sexual predators and child murderers to an instrument being used to punish children and youth for being — children and youth. It would be laughable if the consequences to these kids were not so horrendously serious. Of course there should be consequences: community service, required education classes about the foolishness and potential danger in what they have done, grounding and loss of phone, but dear God in Heaven, don’t make them registered sex offenders and destroy their futures and their lives. There is totally no level at which this makes sense.

Maybe this would be a good time for people to question the need for the latest in technology for their kids. The kid who sent the explicit photos in the first place probably should have had her parents explain sex to her. At 14, she’s too young to be a pron star- what was she thinking. What values did her parents give her that she felt it was OK to send porn photos to her boyfriend. WHat did she expect. They’re kids, didn’t she realize that you grow up & some things aren’t appropriate for a 14 year old? How stupid can people be to expect their kids to grow up with the aid of gadgets & toys, MTV, big allowances & school teachers & friends.Have to wonder about the parents in this. At the very least they should have a talk with the kids about sexually appropriate behaviour- if they know how. And maybe they need parenting classes. Spending a lot of money on your kids isn’t bringing them up properly.

The girl who took the photo in the first place should be charged as well. What kind of pervert sends naked photos of themselves over the internet. Unless she is below average intelligence, she knew what might happen. She’s an exhibitionist. Her mother should take a closer look at the behaviours her slu^^y daughter is exhibitiong, & see if there’s something familiar about what she did.

More folks to join the ranks on the sex offender registry. These registries should be only for violent or repeat offenders which these kids are neither. Instead, they are now banished by society by these laws (many of which are unconstitutional). (Begin Sarcasm) I know now that I feel safer because I can find out where these 3 kids live so I can stay far away (End Sarcasm). The vast majority of politicians are grandstanding idiots. They don’t care about your child’s safety, they care about being

tough on crime so that they can be elected (or re-elected). It would be refreshing if one politician in this country of ours would step up and say these laws do nothing to protect your children and are a massive waste of taxpayer money. Sadly, that will never happen because once again, they care more for themselves than the people they serve.

    The Registry

The Registry is for Violent offenders and pedophiles, not stupid teenagers and 18 year olds caught with their hand in the pants of their 16 or 17 year old girl friend. Our laws have become the plaything of politicians who lack common sense and the toy of judges seeking re-election. Was this violent? NO was it pedophillic? NO was it illegal? Yes, therefore only two out of three of the criteria for the use of the registry were met, AND even if we were to add an optional requirement for sexual predation for the registry, we still only have a single requirement met. This sentencing was the act of an over zealous Jurist who needs to be removed from the bench. As for the proper sentencing... let the punishment fit the crimein addition to bare assed spankings given by the parents, probation, public service and being banned from POSSESSING either a cell phone or a digital camera until the age of 18 for ALL FOUR would be apropriate!

    Cruel and Unusual

By jewlie, 01-30-10, 03:45 PM The girl who took the photo in the first place should be charged as well. What kind of pervert sends naked photos of themselves over the internet. =============== A 14 year old pervert. Ya I mean seriously all 14 year olds have such a great grasp of sex, sexuality and all that. Who has ever heard of a 14 year old pervert?? Newsflash for you. Teenagers are growing up, not grown up. They are curious about sex, sexuality, and their bodies. You seem to be the one here that needs to grow up. How the heck is it a crime to take nude pics of yourself??? There is no victim here!! Adding these 3 to a sex offender list is beyond cruel and unusual. These laws are disgusting and are shameful for the United States of America.
    By freedomwriter, 01-31-10, 06:24 AM

    Stats

In the state of Colorado there are 10,886 registered sex offenders and 145 offenders who have been labeled as sexually violent predators. ============================ marking teens like this is sex offenders is why you see numbers like these ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Juveniles are 36% of all sex offenders who victimize children. Seven out of eight are at least 12 years old. ======================================= More than 10,000 children died from abuse or neglect in the United States from 2001 through 2007. It’s heart-wrenching that each day in America, five children will die from abuse and neglect, while we focus on irrelevant victimless crimes like this. Heart wrenching indeed.

there is no doubt that the Adam Walsh Act and Jesica’s law go to far, as it takes away constitutional rights and infringes on everyones Bill of Rights...I wonder whats going to happen when a over selius cop or D.A charges a Woman for breast feeding in public. Because believe it or not the way the Adam Walsh Act is written it can and sooner or later will happen....but then we have people out there like jewlie that will say good lock the woman up for life or better yet exicute the pervert for breast feeding in public

    So Right

Freedomwriter, you obviously need to clean up your language a bit, but your statistics and facts are right on. If we spent half the time focusing on parenting skills and early childhood intervention that we spend on witch hunts for victimless crimes, we would at least have a shot at making a differende in children’s lives.
    By notasheeple, 01-31-10, 05:00 PM
The real reason they must have them register, is because it is perceived as non-punitive,if an when, society finally perceives that in fact it is a cruel punishment, then that will free hundreds of thousands of people from its grasp!an only then it will show the truly dangerous an be a useful tool for law enforcement only.

Exactly WHAT ( and do be specific... please)

'social good' is served by condemning these children to a lifetime as sex offenders??? The sex offender registry was started to track P R E D A T O R S. These children are NOT predators (neither are the Florida boys who mooned an unmarked state cop car) who need to be monitored for a lifetime. The children are NOT predators (neither was the drunk sailor who pissed behind a dumpster at LaJolla Beach) who need to be tracked for the rest of their lives. These children are NOT predators (neither was the Missouri dad who had pictures of his wife and daughter in bikinis on the beach at Aruba) who needed to be kept away from women and children. These children are NOT predators (neither was the ... okay go read from ETAY aka Ethical Treatment of Adolescents and Youth) who we must fear lurking on street corner across from the parks. Debra LaFave IS a predator... she’s just too pretty to go to jail is all. A young mother breast feeds her baby. A photo of this is taken by her husband. They are arrested for child pornography and forced into sex offender therapy.

I just wish I had the time to do a little research....If a person was to look into our Senators and Congressmans back grounds I would bet a very large percentage of them should be or could be sex offenders themselves. Go back in there record and see the high schools they attended....look up and contact the female students they went to school with and I bet they themselves had sex with under age girls when they were in school. And under a law pasted by many states back in the early 90’s the states lifted the statue of limitations dealing with sexual offences and allows procecution of offence all the way back to 1945...the reason (repressed memory)...just how many of them would and could be considered sex offenders by todays standards....but then again what good would it be they wouldn’t be held to the same standards as the public...after all they are about the law...they write it as they please...
    By freedomwriter, 02-02-10, 06:41 AM

    Here ya go greg

Examples of politicians that fit the popular definition of âsexual offendersâ are: Merrill Barter, Idaho Sen. Larry Craig, Louis Beres, Brian J. Doyle, Deputy Press Secretary for U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Kevin Coan, Florida Rep. Mark Foley, New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, and the list goes on and on. When Arnold Schwarzenegger was 28 he had sex with a 16-year-old girl.[47] Why was he never punished for this âsinfulâ act? Why was he never forced to register as a âsexual offenderâ? The United States government has become the spiritual authority for the American people but the rich and powerful (usually) tend to follow a different set of rules and laws than the common man. Epstein noted that President Andrew Johnson was 18 when he married a 16-year-old, that Barbara Bush started dating the elder George Bush when she was 16 and got engaged when she was 17, and that Mary was in her early teens when she gave birth to Jesus. Laurie A. Gray, deputy prosecuting attorney assigned to juvenile sex crimes in Fort Wayne, Ind. Gray, whose own husband graduated from college the year she was born. Not politicians but....Paul and Mary Onesi married in 1917 and were honored in 1995 by Worldwide Marriage Encounter as the longest-married living couple at that time. What nobody focused on was the fact that when they married, he was 21 and she was 13.

government is way out of controll

Thank you freedomwriter..I had a good idea that there are many of the politicains that would fall under these laws as well as you just show...then my next question is, the constitution and Bill if Right both state very clearly that no one is extended any more right then any one else and that no one is to be denied less right then any one else...how is it possible that all this is going on...has soceity closed there eyes to everything going on around them and don’t care any more unless it effects them directly...don’t people learn form history the mistakes that have taken place...these laws can be compaired to what took place during the salem witch hunt, they are no less depriving them what the Nazi’s did to the jews...or what the U.S. did to the Japanese put in internment camps durring the war....or how we treated the blacks as we inslaved them....all pretty dark days in history...days for which many hang there heads to this day for allowing to happen....but yet they continue to do it over and over as they see fit depending on which segament of soceity they want to target....you know people use the excuse we must protect our chilren....ok then thats a parents job to do NOT THE GOVERNMENTS JOB..and what about the thousands of children they laws are hurting what about them...my brother in law played strip poker with 2 other couples 20 years ago...2 weeks later the police where knocking at his door and arrested him...it turned out that one of the girls was 16 even though she had lied and said she was 19...all the guys were arrested and convicted...he is a registered sex offender ok...and I see first hand how these laws effect his 2 daughters....they cannt go to parks with there dad, he cannt go to church with them, canntattend school activities with the oldest....even had to take the youngest one out of prescholl because my sister runs a business and he was the one that is the stay at home person..and they will not allow him to drop his daughter off or pick her up from preschool.....yep these laws designed to protect children from harm do more harm then good.....all the high profile cases that have come to light resently...really proves how well they laws work.... And I have another one you can add to your list....my grandparents married when my grandmother was 16 and they were happily married for 67 years.
    By greg55, 02-03-10, 11:42 AM
I just read a artical about the Supreem court in Californa turning down a case filed by sex offenders and the court refused to hear it and remanded it back to a lower court....then the reports stated Gov. Schwarzenegger was pleased with there deccision...I wonder how pleased he would be if he would have been charged and convicted for sex with that 16 year old girl
