    (IANS)

Pakistani fighter jets pounded several Taliban hideouts Sunday, killing 16 militants and injuring several more in north-western tribal region near Afghan border, security officials said.

An intelligence official said the airstrikes destroyed eight positions of the Islamist insurgents and one ammunition depot in various areas of Orakzai tribal district.

'According to the information we have received from our local sources 16 miscreants died while several more were injured,' said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The jets also targeted the deserted houses of two militant commanders Haji Nasrullah and Akhtar Jaan and destroyed a nearby school building.

The airstrikes came at the end of a weak that saw a series of deadly suicide bombings by Taliban militants across the country.

Friday, twin suicide bombings targeted a military convoy in a busy market in eastern city of Lahore, killing 60 people and injuring around 100.

Saturday, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive near a security check post in Mingora, the main city in north-western Swat district. Fourteen people, including a soldier and two policemen, died in the bombing that was the sixth this week.
