Man survives extraction of iron rod in Dubai

    Thursday 2nd September, 2010
    (IANS)

An Indian man in Dubai survived a massive surgery to remove a two-metre-long iron rod that penetrated him in an accident, daily newspaper Emirates Today reported Thursday.

The iron rod fell 10 stories before it hit 34-year-old construction worker Saran Kumar Monday, penetrating his shoulder, passing through his abdomen and out of his thigh.

The rod broke through his diaphragm, a lung, and passed through his colon and bladder.

A team of doctors at Dubai's Rashid Hospital performed the complicated surgery during which the rod was very slowly removed in order not to further damage Kumar's organs and arteries.

Doctors also repaired Kumar's internal injuries.

Kumar is said to be in stable condition, and is set to be discharged from the hospital in 10 days.
