 Ananova:
Proteas post stiff target

South Africa set Australia a big target of 290 for victory in the second one-day international at Newlands on Friday.

Thanks to half centuries by Herschelle Gibbs and Justin Kemp, as well as a quick cameo by Shaun Pollock, the Proteas put in a team effort in setting the big total of 289 for seven in their innings.

Gibbs scored 66 off 71 balls at a crucial time of the innings, while Kemp went to his seventh one day half century off the last ball - hitting his landmark in just 41 balls with a whirlwind 51 not out.

After winning an important toss at the ground - where statistics say that the side batting first has a 77% chance of winning - the South Africans started well but were given a double setback as Australia took two early wickets to slow the quick early tempo on a good batting pitch.

Graeme Smith was first to go, being bowled by Stuart Clark for 24 while Boeta Dippenaar played on for a confident 31 off Shane Watson's bowling. Gibbs came to the crease and initially played patiently, but then turned up the heat after Watson removed AB de Villiers for 18.

The addition of wicketkeeper Mark Boucher brought some urgency and the home side kept the scoring rate up and put on 80 in just 79 balls for the fourth wicket before Brad Hogg deceived Gibbs to mistime a shot and loop it neatly back into the bowler's hands.

Boucher hit three sixes as he took on the Australian bowling - including two massive shots over midwicket - before Hogg trapped him leg before as he tried to slog sweep the spin bowler. The wicketkeeper's contribution of 42 off 59 balls was also a vital part of the innings.

Big hitters Kemp and Pollock peppered the boundaries, sending the rate skywards as they put on 62 off just 59 deliveries - including a massive over of 22 off Stuart Clark. However, Pollock tried his luck once too often to mistime a shot and sky a ball to Michael Clarke off Brett Lee's bowling for a quickfire 38 off 27 balls which included three fours and two sixes.

Kemp kept on plugging away, but lost partner Robin Peterson for just four as he scooped a ball to backward point off Clark's bowling as Damien Martyn took a simple catch.

Kemp finished unbeaten on 51 - courtesy of the boundary off the last ball - off just 41 balls. Other than the solitary four, he hit four sixes in his innings. Andrew Hall was unbeaten on four at the end of the innings.
